Learning Activities: South Carolina Standards
President Obama inherited the worst economic mess since the Great Depression. The U.S. economy began to grow again in late summer. But, this so-called "jobless recovery" could be undermined if rising unemployment saps consumer confidence and spending as the holiday season passes.
SIRS Issues Researcher offers a set of "can do" ideas for stimulating green industry jobs to help stem long-term unemployment.
Your SIRS Discoverer subscription offers hands-on sets of essential questions for critical thinking related to the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games: What major events will you be watching at the Winter Olympics and why? How do the Olympic games promote world peace and understanding?

SIRS & proquestk12.com Updates
Text to Speech & Downloadable Audio
Our new interactive Text to Speech feature reads articles out loud to students. The text is auto-highlighted in sync with sound, allowing students to follow along as the article is read.
Downloadable Audio MP3 files also allow learners at all levels to listen to articles online, or download and save each recording to your local computer. Both features are available today in our SIRS Leading Issue articles.

Education Impacts: The SIRS Text to Speech capability supports differentiated instruction, while highlighting the text in sync with sound allows lower-level readers and ELL students to follow text to aid comprehension and increase readability.
Downloadable Audio MP3 files also allow students to hear the audio version of articles, but without words being highlighted. This further differentiates instruction for learners who need audio, but not visual support. In addition, this downloadable audio file can be saved and retrieved at a later time.
